Justice Surya Kant Appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India.

Justice Surya Kant

The President of India has officially appointed Justice Surya Kant as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will assume office on November 24, 2025, succeeding Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, who retires on November 23, 2025.

Justice Surya Kant, born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar district of Haryana, will serve as the head of the Indian judiciary until his retirement on February 9, 2027. He is widely respected for his expertise in constitutional, service, and civil law matters.

He began his legal career in 1984 and became the youngest Advocate-General of Haryana in 2000. Later, he served as a Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court (2004), Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court (2018), and was elevated to the Supreme Court of India in 2019.

As Chief Justice, Justice Kant will preside over constitutional benches, allocate cases, and oversee the administrative functioning of the Supreme Court. His appointment upholds the tradition of elevating the senior-most Supreme Court judge to the position of CJI.

Experts believe his tenure will emphasize judicial transparency, case-management efficiency, and service jurisprudence reforms. His term of about 15 months is expected to focus on streamlining court processes and strengthening access to justice through NALSA.

Justice Kant is currently the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and is known for his balanced and reform-oriented judicial philosophy.

This appointment marks a significant step for India’s judiciary, signaling continuity, experience, and a focus on efficient justice delivery.
