Family Expense Tracker — how it works

One shared notebook for the household budget. Two people, one page, zero confusion.

🎭 A conversation that happens in every household…

(Names changed. Story unchanged.)

Wife
Listen, the ₹5,000 you gave me last week — it's over.
Husband
Over? Already? Where did it all go?
Wife
Arey, how do I explain everything… child's tuition fee, groceries, medicines, that puja chanda at Mrs. Sharma's house, autowala, the tailor, and… well, lots of small-small things. You won't understand.
Husband
I have been telling you — keep a small diary. Write down every expense. But no. The mobile is always in your hand, and the diary is always… somewhere else.
Wife
Diary, diary, diary. Who writes in a diary these days? It's 2026.
Husband
Fine. No diary. I've made an account on FormatPotter. From now on, whatever you spend — you log it there. Grocery, tuition, medicine, chanda, everything. So both of us know where the money is going. And before asking for the next ₹5,000, we will both look at the numbers.
Wife
Hmm. Fine. But on one condition — I'll be checking your expenses too. And you'll have a fixed monthly allocation, just like me.
Husband
Deal. Equal budget, equal visibility. No one hides anything, no one has to explain anything twice.
Wife
Then okay. Let's save the budget — together.
Sound familiar? That's exactly why this tool exists. Two people, one budget, no confusion. Here's how to use it.

How to use the Family Expense Tracker

A shared notebook for the household budget. No apps to install, no accounts to link — just the two of you and one honest page.

1

One of you starts the household

Open the tool and click Create a new household. Pick a username, a password, and a household name you'll both remember (something like sharma-family). Whoever does this becomes the owner.

Congratulations — you're now officially in charge of clicking buttons.

2

Add your better half

Once logged in, look for the Add Family Member panel. Create a username and password for your partner and hand it over — by memory, WhatsApp, or a note under the fridge magnet. Your choice.

They log in with those details and land on the same household. Same data, different login. Two keys, one drawer.

3

Allocate the month's fund

In the Allocate Budget panel, add money to each person's wallet — the amount you both agreed on for the month. You can top up any time, and every top-up is recorded. Nothing gets overwritten, nothing gets forgotten.

Think of it as handing over the envelope — except this envelope never loses receipts.

4

Log every expense as it happens

After buying groceries, paying the electricity bill, or giving puja chanda, open the tool and add it under Add Expense. Pick a category, type the amount, add a small note if you like.

Takes about as long as typing one WhatsApp message — and it saves you a hundred.

5

Both of you see everything

The Monthly Budgets cards show each person's allocated amount, spent amount, remaining balance, and a progress bar. The Expenses This Month section splits spending per person — so you can see who spent what, on what, and when.

No interrogations. No "where did the money go?" moments. The page already knows.

6

Top up only when it makes sense

When the balance runs low and someone asks for more, you both look at the same numbers and decide together. The wallet shows exactly how much has been spent and on what. Every rupee is accounted for.

That's the whole point — no arguments, only numbers.

Small tip: log expenses the same day. Ten seconds now saves ten minutes of guessing at the end of the month. The budget works best when the entries are honest and the coffee is strong.

Works on any phone, tablet, or computer with a browser. Free forever. No ads inside the tool.
