How Percentage Calculations Work

  1. X% of Y — multiply X by Y, then divide by 100. Example: 15% of 200 = (15 × 200) ÷ 100 = 30.
  2. X is what % of Y — divide X by Y, then multiply by 100. Example: 25 of 200 = (25 ÷ 200) × 100 = 12.5%.
  3. Increase/decrease — subtract old from new, divide by old, multiply by 100.
  4. Add/subtract % — multiply the number by (1 ± percent ÷ 100).
  5. Percentage difference — |A − B| ÷ ((A + B) ÷ 2) × 100.
