Note: The proposed spellings are based on original Odia pronunciation as examined by the committee chaired by Padma Bhushan Pratibha Ray. These are currently in the public consultation stage and are not yet finalized. Citizens, linguists, and stakeholders are encouraged to submit their suggestions/objections within the stipulated 30-day period.
📖 Background: Many official place names in Odisha do not accurately reflect the Odia language and pronunciation due to historical transliteration practices during British rule and subsequent administrative usage. The Revenue & Disaster Management Department had earlier invited proposals from districts, which were examined by the expert committee. The current notification places the committee's recommendations in the public domain for wider consultation before finalization.
